Hornbeams make lovely shade trees; the compact size fits the scale of the average home nicely! These trees are also excellent for attracting wildlife, including songbirds and swallowtail butterflies. Hornbeam trees also have strong, low-growing branches, perfect for climbing! Mature size and form are species and varity specific. Plant in organic rich soil in full to part sun. Water regularly, especially when young to help the tree get established. Once the tree is established, it can tolerate longer periods without water. This is a good, low maintenance tree for landscapes. New foliage is reddish-purple, changing to a dark green and then to orange-red in the fall. That is a lot of foliage interest throughout the year! The bark is blue-gray and provides winter interest.

  • Sun to Part Sun
  • Orange-red fall foliage color
  • Compact size makes for a good home landscape tree
  • Mature size varies with species and variety
  • Plant in acidic, moist, well-drained soil
