Tiarella, also known as Foam Flowers, are charming, shade-loving perennials, perfect for woodland gardens. Sprays of small, spidery flowers, rise above lower growing foliage; the inflorescence gives an appearance of foam. Several species of tiarellas are native to eastern North America. These plants are closely related to Huechera and have been crossed to produce Heucherella plants. Some tiarella may grow long stolons, which allows them to spread through woodland gardens like a groundcover, while others form clumps.  Leaves are semi-evergreen and often turn reddish in the fall and winter; the rest of the year, a red or purple branches vein radiates from the center of the leaves. When planting, be sure to plant a little high (about 1 inch) to avoid covering plant crown.

  • Shade to Part Sun
  • Plant in well-drained soils
  • Plant size and bloom color varies with specific plant variety
  • Prefer neutral soil pH
  • Deer and rabbits tend to leave tiarella alone
  • Do not over fertilize

Adding these plants to native plant gardens or mixed landscape beds for a naturalized look. Rudbeckias grow well in average soil but the soil needs to be able to hold moisture.

One of the most popular varieties is ‘Goldsturm’, which has a mature size of about 24 inches tall, and a similar width.  These grow very well in sunny spaces; if the clump gets too large for your space, just divide it and give plant starts away to friends!

Russian Sage isn’t a true Sage (genus name Salvia) but instead is from the genus Perovskia. Russian Sage feature long, wispy wands of lavender or blue flower and silvery foliage. This plant is a long season bloomer; from summer to fall, it shows off it’s large (bloom spikes up to a foot long!). The aromatic, silvery leaves are striking; the serrated leaves give the plant a fine texture with pairs wonderfully with larger leafed plants or stones. Large varieties may need staking later in the season. Groupings of Russian Sage create a dramatic backdrop for smaller perennials and work well in a border planting.
