Japanese Maples are known for creating visual interest and for good reason. Leaves may be deep red or green in color, and the many different varieties offer a myriad of leaf shapes from lace-leaf to large, palmate leaves. These trees also offer a variety of forms, from upright to dwarf, weeping in form. Bright fall foliage color is another outstanding landscape feature in some varieties. Although Japanese Maples are deciduous, the interesting branching structure of these small ornamental trees provides wonderful winter interest in the garden. These ornamental trees are ideal specimen plants. In our area, all Japanese Maples will perform better with protection from the afternoon sun. Several varieties can tolerate more sun (Crimson Queen, Sangu Kaku and Emperor I). Pair with other shade plants such as azaleas, hydrangeas, hardy ferns, coral bells and hostas for a good texture contrast. Apply 2-3 inches of desired mulch and water regularly after planting. Wait until the second growing season to feed with slow release, balanced fertilizer.

  • Shade to Part Sun
  • Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil
  • Leaf color is variety dependent, as is mature size and form
  • Prune to shape during late winter or early spring, only as needed

Ornamental plum trees have much to offer the landscape; they are small, blooming deciduous trees, and several varieties have purple leaves. Although these trees are planted for the pinkish-purple blooms or the reddish-purple leaves, they do produce small red fruits, which attract birds. Flowering is in the early spring, harkening the arrival of the season. Plums do best planted in full to part sun, in an area with well-draining acidic soil. Drainage is key; they will not do well in poorly drained areas and in fact, are moderately drought tolerant once established. Although they prefer acidic soil, they also tolerate alkaline and clay soils. Mature size, bloom color, and leaf color are variety specific.

Magnolia trees are diverse in leaf shape, plant form, bloom and even include both evergreen and deciduous types. Southern Magnolias and related varieties such as Little Gem (a dwarf form) and Teddy Bear (also smaller than the Southern Magnolia) feature dark green, evergreen leaves, large white, fragrant blooms and is the classic tree that is often synonymous with “magnolia”. These trees offer year-round beauty. In contrast, there are deciduous types, commonly called tulip trees, with large saucer flowers that show before the trees leaf out in the spring. These may also be called saucer magnolias and include the popular pinkish-purple blooming Jane Magnolia and relatives. There are also deciduous magnolias with star-shaped flowers, such as Royal Star. In between the deciduous and evergreen magnolias, there are Sweet Bay magnolias. Although they are evergreen in the lower and coastal South, they are only partially evergreen here in central Arkansas. These magnolias have distinctive gray-green foliage and tolerate wet feet. Mature plant size varies so pick the right magnolia for your space as they are difficult to transplant. Plant in rich, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil.

  • Sun to Part Sun
  • Bloom color, mature size, and plant form are species and variety specific
  • May be evergreen or deciduous
  • Small, evergreen types such as Little Gem may work as screening trees
  • Blooms may be fragrant
  • Showy blooms

Once they are established, Cedars do not require much water. Mature size varies greatly with species and variety; for example Deodora Cedars can grow to 40-50 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide, while Horstmann Blue Atlas Cedars mature at 8-10- feet tall and 5-6 feet wide. River Birch trees are easy to grow in medium to wet soils in sun to part sun. River Birch is adaptable and the most heat tolerant of the birches, making it a good tree for our area… in fact, they are native to Missouri. River Birches are vigorous, fast growing trees, maturing to a size of 40-70 feet tall and 40-60 feet wide. Although they prefer moist, acidic, fertile soil, including semi-aquatic soil, they can tolerate drier soils once established. Adapts well to heavier clay soil and can also tolerate poor drainage. Prune in the winter; tree sap runs in the spring. River Birch trees are typically grown as multi-trunk trees and feature eye-catching exfoliating bark in a salmon-pink to reddish-brown color, which peals off to reveal a lighter inner bark. The leaves are tough, medium to dark green in color with toothed margins. Fall color is yellow.
